Somehow, another season is upon us, and we are thrust into that length of time when closet cravings are at their peak. Although the prospect of a fresh, warm season is thrilling, it also makes the styling process that much more daunting. Suddenly we are inclined to add pops of colour to every look, showing a bit more skin with each Celsius incline and all the while patiently sifting out the warm wools for the light linens.
Of course, last year’s stock of Spring pieces never quite seem good enough for us this time around. So begins the cycle…what does my wardrobe need this season?
The best part about Spring – other than the lively weather and the newfound urge we all have to sit on patios and go for walks – is the colour. Some years, the shade on everybody’s lips is coral, others it’s yellow, more recently it’s been colour blocking that has everyone’s attention, and more often that not, pastel colours are a must-have. This year, a refreshing take on traditional pastels has arisen – denoting flavours of mint, apricot, raspberry and lemon. Blouses, loafers, skirts and tanks are delicious in these shades, making my cravings turn from ice cream cones to silk sorbet. A new-found adoration that holds no hidden calories, but only implicates a small dent on your credit card – which is worse?

Reader’s Digest

by Kaylee Pare

This beyond-unique bag caught my eye in 2011, and ever since, I’ve been searching for items that match its distinctiveness, to no avail until recently. Today, I was finally able to unearth the bag’s designer. Olympia Le-Tan, a self-taught Parisian designer who started her career at Karl Legerfeld and Balmain. The two-year old brand of accessories encapsulates the designer’s two passions; embroidery and literature. The result is a collection of bags that you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere. They are unique in their quality, shape and concept – bringing the typical satchels, shoulder bags and hobo shapes to shame. With celebrities like Natalie Portman and Tilda Swinton supporting the designer on red carpets, there’s no telling where Olympia Le-Tan’s next creations will take her. Truth be told, we carry our lives in our purses, so it’s nice to be forced to downsize every once and a while…and carrying a little piece of creative genius on your hip or in your hand, never, ever goes out of style.

Click Refresh

by Kaylee Pare

You’re perusing your usual stores, picking up items that any of your friends would suspect you’d like. An item that is a little risqué, out of the ordinary or truly outside of the ‘box’, catches your eye, and instead of including it in your pile of choices, you put it down in fear of making an experimental purchase. This is a regular practice in many of our shopping routines; we subconsciously steer clear of radical items, even though they have stopped us in our tracks. With the dawn of a new year comes opportunity for change. Most of us have resolved to adjust certain parts of our lives, and a fairly easy and effective modification is to rethink every shopping decision we make. The next time you’re clicking ‘add to bag’ or examining a price tag, think about whether your closet needs a rejuvenation, and most importantly, whether this item will accomplish that. In short, click refresh and push the envelope. 2012 is your blank canvas.

Coiled Cuffs

by Kaylee Pare

Lately I’m into piling on each of my favourite one-strand bracelets, making for a heavily accessorized look. These coiled pieces, however, create more of a dignified moment, wrapping around wrists like a snake, standing out alone. Spiral designs are lovely embellishments, and whether stacked or solo, they will surely become a favorite among your box of treasures. Coiled cuffs are definitely having a moment, but it’s safe to say that they will be forever fashionable.

1. Free People Gilded Coil Cuff: A delicate piece that I’d probably end up throwing on everyday. It’s simple and works with any gold trimmings you would pair it with.
2. Alexis Bittar Crystal Encrusted Orbiting Cuff: This one’s my favorite of them all, it adds that little sparkle – a very wearable item for day and night.
3. Alexander McQueen Spiral Twin Skull Bangle: This one’s for those McQueen skull lovers out there. It’s an edgy piece that would be the ideal guest at one of Man Repeller’s arm parties.
4. Michael Kors Snake Wrap Bracelet: Great for someone with a tendency towards masculine styles with more bulk.
5. Aurélie Bidermann Braided Arm Cuff: This one is meant to be worn on your arm, not your wrist. I need to find a piece like this, it’s so ideal for a night on the town.
6. Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Bracelet: Gives the impression that you’ve stacked several bracelets together, without the added fuss and noise! The intricate detailing is classic Bottega.

Think Spring

by Kaylee Pare

While your neighbourhood stores may be pushing Fall items right now, designers have moved on to bigger and better things, like Spring collections. Women’s Wear Daily got a sneak peek of some of the 2012 accessories collections and shared the sketches with their subscribers, and I in turn, am sharing them with you! I’d have to say that at first glance, my favourites are Oscar de la Renta, Nicolas Kirkwood and Maxmara but we’ll have to see how it all turns out on the runway! Can you pick a favourite?

Color Now: Yellow

by Kaylee Pare

Nothing screams summer like the color yellow- bringing thoughts of bright walks in the park and lounging pool-side with only your favorite shades blocking the sunshine. Yellow is also a cheery color to wear when you need that one extra part of your day to shine lightheartedly and remind you that the smallest things can make you smile. Red lips, tan leather and dark denim are the perfect accents to this beaming color. A sweet yellow dress or a small lemony clutch will become your favorite go-to pieces for the coming summer days.

Accordion Pleats

by Kaylee Pare

While street style images can easily make me loath my wardrobe, they’re also a great way to demonstrate what items to buy right now. It can be fairly difficult to find skirts that flatter and I think this newest trend may be a great solution. Accordion pleats are light and breezy and when worn correctly, can really make an outfit look effortless. What’s great is that they’re worn maxi, midi and mini length so depending on your height or style, you can wear them however you want. I will be on the hunt for one this weekend so I’ll report back!

Shoulder Shock

by Kaylee Pare

To me it’s one of the sexiest parts of the human body, and it deserves a little attention- the shoulder. While Olivia Palermo’s bare back (above) may be your first point of notice, her beautiful petal-adorned shoulder is what really makes this outfit. Lately I’ve found that garments with shoulder accents have garnered my attention, and it struck me that it’s not often a matter of interest (ground-breaking, I know). So, this post is for every girl begging to show some love to their most under-appreciated joint (anyone?). Whether it’s some major embellishment, a touch of fur, or a cut-out, it’s a great way to transition to summer without having to expose your less-than-bronzed legs.
